School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences University of Sydney
Alister Funnell completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of Sydney in 2003 and graduated with the University Medal. He conducted his Honours research project in the laboratory of Professor Merlin Crossley in the School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences. This project focused on the regulation of basic Krüppel-like factor (Bklf), a transcription factor with a putative role in erythropoiesis. He identified a novel, erythroid-specific Bklf promoter and found that another family member, erythroid Krüppel-like factor (Eklf), utilises this promoter to activate transcription of the Bklf gene. This project sparked in him a keen interest in transcription factors and he subsequently undertook a PhD in the same lab, leading to the discovery of a more extensive regulatory hierarchy within the Klf family. This work has been awarded with poster prizes at the 2005, 2006 and 2008 Lorne Genome Conferences and has been published in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Alister has recently submitted his thesis and in the interim, he is examining the biological function of Klf8 in collaboration with Professor Patrick Tam's group at the Children's Medical Research Institute.
The ASBMB Fellowship enabled Alister to present his findings at the First International Symposium on the Biology of the Krüppel-like Factors at the University of Tokyo. This provided him with an invaluable opportunity to exchange ideas and initiate collaborative projects with international laboratories.
