2002 ASBMB Fellowship: Cameron Jennings
Cameron
completed his Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in 1998
at La Trobe University. His honours project, supervised by
Associate Professor Marilyn Anderson in the Department of
Biochemistry at La Trobe University and Professor David Craik from
the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at The University of
Queensland, centred on the molecular events involved in the
biosynthesis of cyclotides, which are cyclic knotted proteins from
plants. In 1999, Cameron received an Australia Postgraduate Award
and commenced a PhD at La Trobe University under the joint
supervision of Marilyn and David where he continued his research
into the molecular events involved in protein cyclisation. Since
commencing his PhD, Cameron has established that cyclotides are
produced from gene encoded precursor proteins and has identified a
putative processing site involved in the cleavage and cyclisation
of cyclotide precursors. This work was recently published in the
PNAS journal and is the subject of an international patent. The
ASBMB fellowship will allow Cameron to attend the American Society
for Cell Biology conference in San Francisco, California.
