2009 ASBMB Award: Stella Lee

School of Molecular & Microbial Biosciences, University of Sydney

Stella Lee completed a Bachelor of Science (Molecular Biology and Genetics) in 2003 with a University Medal. She conducted her research in the laboratory of Professor Merlin Crossley at the University of Sydney. In her Honours year, she characterised the interaction between a zinc finger and a coiled-coil domain, resulting in a publication in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. During her PhD, she investigated the phosphorylation of Basic Krüppel-Like Factor (BKLF) and other related family members by Homeodomain-Interacting Protein Kinase 2 (HIPK2). Phosphorylation of BKLF enhances its activity and is proposed to have a role in ultraviolet light-induced apoptosis. She has been awarded a poster prize at the Lorne Genome Conference in 2007 and the Greg Ralston-Beckman Coulter Travelling Scholarship. She has also presented in a symposium in ComBio2008. Besides scientific research, Stella has also been involved extensively in undergraduate teaching. Since 2007, she has been the head tutor for second year biochemistry. From March 2009, she will take up a postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Professor Richard Harvey at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, exploring heart development. The ASBMB Fellowship will enable Stella to attend the EMBO meeting in Amsterdam in August 2009
