2011 ASBMB Award - Shixiong Tan

Garvan Institute of Medical Research

TanAfter graduating with a Diploma in Biotechnology from Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore, in 2001 and spending two years away from science in the Singapore army, Shixiong Tan pursued and obtained his Bachelor degree with first class Honours in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at UNSW in 2005. Under the supervision of Dr Gabriel Perrone and Professor Ian Dawes, Shixiong investigated the effect of various stresses and their impact on intracellular redox balance and oxidative stress tolerance in Sacchromyces cerevisiae. Obtaining the Endeavor International Postgraduate Research Scholarship allowed him to continue his research in the same laboratory as a PhD candidate. During his PhD, Shixiong used biochemical assays coupled with molecular cloning and yeast genetics to investigate key players involved in glutathione, thioredoxin and NADPH redox homeostasis. During this period, he published his work as a first author in Molecular Biology of the Cell and Journal of Biological Chemistry, and as second author on two papers in Free Radical Biology of Medicine and a review article in BBA-Molecular Cell Research. Currently, Shixiong is undertaking postdoctoral training at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research under the supervision of Professor David James, investigating the role of Akt kinase and the regulation of the glucose transporter GLUT4 in metabolism. This has enabled him to engross himself in mammalian cell biology, which complements his experience in yeast biology, and has recently published a paper as a first author in Biochemical Journal from research in Professor James’ lab.
