Dr Amber Willems-Jones is a Senior Lecturer (Education Focussed Academic) in the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry & Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne. Amber coordinates the 2nd year biochemistry & molecular biology practical subject, Techniques in Molecular Science, and co-coordinates the 1st year Exploring Biomedicine subject. Amber is the Deputy Chair of the Education Special Interest Group of the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) and Chair of the School of Biomedical Sciences Education Research Group.
Amber’s sustained excellence in teaching and learning has been recognised by several teaching awards at the University of Melbourne reflecting her passion for education. In her teaching, Amber’s focus is on ensuring students acquire the requisite skills and understanding of key concepts that lay at the foundation of practical biochemistry and molecular biology. Amber’s education research is directed towards the development of inquiry-based learning tasks designed to improve student understanding, as well as promoting the importance of self-regulated learning processes and strategies, including self-reflection and self-assessment. Amber has a keen interest in the development and maintenance of quantitative literacy skills of students in applied biomedical science subjects. In addition, Amber is proactive in promoting learning tools to enhance the development of scientific communications skills, academic judgement and assessment literacy of all students across the School of Biomedical Sciences.
