Jessica Gibbons is an Education-Focused senior lecturer from Monash University. Jessica works within the School of Biomedical Sciences, the Biomedical Discovery Institute. Jessica is currently the Deputy Director for the Bachelor of Biomedical Science, responsible for leading teaching and learning innovation, assessment transformation and educational excellence. In this role, Jessica has implemented innovative, authentic experiences within the molecular biology and biochemistry units of the course. Faced with a reality where most biomedical science students do not pursue lab or research-based careers, Jessica is passionate about transferable skill development, particularly communication and critical thinking, in small group teaching environments such as laboratory classes and workshops.
Jessica’s teaching philosophy is grounded in preparing students for the future by equipping with them with skills to learn and discipline literacy, rather memorising all the steps of a metabolic pathway (but seriously, can they at least remember what glycolysis is….?).
In addition to teaching, Jessica leads an education research group and has established a research unit for undergraduate students to undertake education projects within the biomedical science disciplines. Her current research interests include student motivation, scaffolded skill development and assessment transformation.
