Dr Matthew Clemson is a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney.
Matthew’s research background is in immunogenetics, and epigenetic transcriptional regulation of genes linked to cancer, cystic fibrosis and HIV infection.
Matthew joined The University of Sydney in 2020, where he leads a diverse teaching team to coordinate Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Biochemistry Interdisciplinary Project Unit, and lectures into the Bachelor of Pharmacy program. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), an Academic Advisor for the Faculty of Science, a member of the SOLES Education Committee and represents the School on the Faculty Student Life Committee.
Matthew has pioneered numerous innovative teaching practices for which he has been invited to speak at universities across Australia and New Zealand. He has built the University of Sydney’s reputation as a leader in molecular biology education nationally and he represents the university on the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Education Special Interest Group Committee.
His current interests include developing laboratory simulations that adhere to the principles of biochemistry to produce realistic experimental data and working collaboratively with generative AI to facilitate student learning and to foster authentic assessment. He has recently developed a Socratic AI-double of himself “Dr MattTabolism” who is enormously popular with students.
