SPG - Student Prizes

One of the core purposes of the Sydney Protein Group is to provide opportunities for postgraduate students working in the field of protein science to attend high quality scientific meetings, at which they will be able to hear recent research results from a range of areas, interact with other researchers, and present their own work to a wide audience.

The SPG offers several prizes of this type:

The Thompson Prize, named the eminent local protein scientist, E.O.P. (Ted) Thompson, was inaugurated in 1992 and is awarded for the best presentation by a young local scientist in the field of protein structure and function. Please go here for the application process.

Two prizes that allow the recipient to attend the Lorne Protein Conference in the following year. These prizes are sponsored by ATA Scientific. Please go here for the application process.

In 1999, a third prize was added, to be sponsored by the SPG. The Greg Ralston Memorial Prize is to be awarded to a BSc. (Hons) student (or equivalent, e.g., MRes) who intends to continue on to a PhD program in the following year. The prize allows the student to attend the Lorne Protein Conference. Please go here for the application process.

In 2012, SPG introduced a fourth prize, to be sponsored by the SPG. The ComBio ECR award includes a guaranteed speaking slot along with a monetary prize to assist in the cost of attending ComBio conferences. This award is specifically targeted at post-docs up to 5 years since the award of their PhD (taking into account any career interruptions).
